No Fuel For Old Vehicles: The Delhi government has taken an important decision to deal with the problem of ever-increasing air pollution in the capital Delhi. From July 1, 2025, vehicles older than the prescribed age limit in Delhi will not be given any kind of fuel. This rule will apply to all types of fuel including petrol, diesel and CNG. The main objective of this step is to improve the air quality of the city and reduce the level of harmful pollutants.
Implementation of rules with modern technology
To effectively implement this new rule, ANPR cameras will be installed at all petrol pumps. These automatic number plate recognition cameras will scan the number plate of each vehicle and instantly determine if the vehicle is under the prescribed age limit. Whenever an old vehicle comes for refueling, the system will send an immediate alert and the petrol pump employee will be instructed to refuse fuel to that vehicle.
Comprehensive monitoring and compliance regime
For the successful implementation of the new rule, a comprehensive monitoring system is being set up. Clear notice boards will be installed at all petrol pumps informing about the new rule. Petrol pump employees are being given special training so that they can understand and implement this process correctly. If any petrol pump violates this rule, strict action can be taken against it under Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Scientific basis of pollution control
There are solid scientific reasons behind taking this decision. The Delhi-NCR region is considered to have the most polluted air in the country. Old vehicles are a major source of dangerous pollutants like PM 2.5 and nitrogen oxide. These pollutants cause respiratory diseases, heart disease and other serious health problems. By removing old vehicles from the roads, air pollution levels can be significantly reduced.
Essential tips for vehicle owners
Individuals who have vehicles older than ten to fifteen years should make an immediate action plan. Such vehicle owners have mainly three options – selling the vehicle, getting it scrapped or buying a new vehicle. The Delhi Transport Department will keep a complete record of vehicle scrapping. If appropriate steps are not taken in time, vehicle owners may have to face problems like fines, vehicle seizure and fuel ban.
This rule will apply equally not only to local vehicles of Delhi but also to vehicles with numbers from outside states. This will bring uniformity in pollution control across the region. In the long run, this policy is expected to see a clear improvement in the air quality of the city. This step can serve as an ideal model for other states as well.
